Ripening at Wigan, UK
Compagnie Fruitiere UK Limited’s new state-of-the-art ripening facility in Wigan opened for business in October, 2014. This multi-million pound investment occupies c61,000 sq ft on a 3.8 acre site and primarily provides state-of-the-art banana ripening for the north of the UK.
Spread over two units the facility boasts ample office space, comfortable staff areas, vast packhouse and loading areas, and an impressive 32 environmentally controlled ripening rooms which can produce a staggering c100,000 boxes of ripened bananas a week.
The overall facility has been diligently designed to achieve a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) rating of 'Very Good’.
Within the facility’s impressive infrastructure comes a host of technological advancements. Upgraded computer systems and newly implemented tablet technology offers vastly improved monitoring and quality control procedures.
Further innovation is seen in a leading edge voice controlled stock movement system - a first for the produce industry in the UK - which allows warehouse operatives to work ‘hands free’ while tracking stock, order picking, shipment picking and handling dispatch.
The site with its excellent motorway links - M6 Junctions only 5 minutes away - also acts as a first-class distribution centre serving our long term relationship with Tesco, along with other supermarkets and grocery stores in the region.
