The Apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family Rosaceae.
Apples are one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits throughout the world. The deciduous trees, blossom in the spring simultaneously with the budding of the leaves.
Modern orchards are planted semi-intensively in rows on dwarfing rootstocks. This allows for more efficient management of the trees and allows for easier access to the fruits at harvest. An apple orchard will typically remain in optimum production for around 25 years whereas its Pome fruit relative the pear, grown and cultivated in a similar way, can happily produce fruit for up to 60 years - hence the grower’s term, ‘pears for your heirs’.
The main types of apples CFUK handle include:
- Royal Gala
- Golden Delicious
- Granny Smith
- Pink Lady
Apples and Pears are grown in opposing hemispheres, (North/South) as they have opposite (summer) growing seasons. This allows for the marketing of these fruits all year round.
