Pineapple is the name for an edible tropical fruit which is part of the Bromeliaceae family. It is native to Paraguay and the Southern part of Brazil.
The pineapple, which usually grows to about 1/1.5metres, is a ‘multiple fruit’ - multiple, helically arranged flowers along the axis each produce a fleshy fruit that becomes pressed against the fruits of adjacent flowers forming what appears to be a single fruit.
The word pineapple was first recorded in 1398 being used by European explorers who liken the appearance of this tropical fruit to the reproductive organs of conifer trees commonly known as pine cones.
James Dole, founder of the Dole fruit company, did a lot to popularise the fruit and make it affordable through his pineapple plantations in Hawaii. His goal was to have the convenient canned pineapple in every grocery store in America.
Pineapples are a good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin B1.
